I met Holly through Christina Noel and the Creature. It was evident from the get go that she was a deeply generous and caring spirit. When she wanted to stand behind her yoga practice more and make herself available to those that could benefit from hers studies and energy, I couldn’t have been more happy that she came to me to capture her essence, business and simple sense of nurturing love through yoga. She’s an outstanding dancer, human and healer walking this earth. I think that “heart clutching” feeling she has came through.
It was the end of October, a perfect time for a beach music video escapade. We spent the day in the sand, between homemade sips of coffee and snacks, getting into action to celebrate one of Dustin’s tracks. Isabel choreographed some quirky and fun dance to compliment the sounds of Air Ceremony’s “hands that feed” and despite the need for technical execution and navigation of changing sun and wind, the day was playful and full of spirit. Not featured here is the warm gathering and meal shared to honor our efforts and friendship after hours in the cold, warm hearts and all.
I was invited to capture the choreographic world of Breton Tyner-Bryan during her 2018 participation in Josh Prince’s Broadway Dance Lab Connect. The visit to the studio at Harlem School for the Arts was an electric time. It didn’t take long to fall into the web of the intricate and robust characters of the piece “Ayi Solace.”
Breton Tyner-Bryan is a dancing lady of Spring. She is one of the first characters I met in New York City when I was taking ballet nearly every day. Ever so majestic, silky and captivating . . . working with Breton was instinctual. In this particular film, I followed her flow, highlighting movement of a special being on a warm day on 125th Street. She drips of nostalgia and a past time. Her shoes and feet are stunning and her body language has a lush gratitude for life.
It’s a tradition to go to the Indiana Dunes State Park when I travel back home. Now that my sister has a dog, wild and tender Theo, our visits have become a trio and we leave different footprints than when we did as kids. There is something ever so nostalgic about returning to Lake Michigan and it continues to be a treasure to watch my sister grow up, season after season, with the sand dunes as a backdrop of our evolving lives.
It was so warming to be invited in to capture Maggie Segale and dancers during their final rehearsal at Judson Church before a performance event later in the week. Maggie’s process is full, contemplative and spacious. I was thankful to roam around the space capturing intimate moments between the expansive or traversing movements. It’s a sacred space and being at Judson with Maggie really reminds the spirit of all that has happened on that floor.
One of my greatest pleasures has been reconnecting with artist Jeanann Dara after years apart. We met in Spain for a composer festival while I was still in school dancing. When we ran into one another again in New York it was obvious we needed to create together. Below is a music video we created together, featuring César Brodermann and myself. We improvised a duet to one of her songs and then I spent that summer creating a final edit of the music video. The energy of the moment says a lot. There is much dearness and nearness with the people involved in this project and I of course loved seeing the project through to its finished product.
This film is a spontaneous duet between Alyssa Forte and Zëk Stewart while on tour with NatalieInMotion in 2014. We were off the shore of Lake Michigan under the street lamps of a neighborhood very connected to my childhood. This moment happened near the end of a residency after a week of cultivating intimacy and performance freedom. It is amazing how two strangers can grow to trust one another, allowing vulnerability and appreciation into the container of partnership.
Jeff Shortt and dancers spend time in the studio to embody portions of Ontology, a work he has been developing for quite some time. I was invited in during their performance preparation to capture fragments of the world they are making. There is much subtlety and power here to enjoy.
